1961, Italy. The beginning of a new era of Italian design dominance is marked by the launch of Abitare, the magazine that would go on to lead the movement. Rizzoli New York is proud to commemorate half a century of this revolutionary lifestyle magazine.
Abitare: 50 Years of Design reproduces the best pages from the annals of the publication from its founding to today, reflecting the major designs and trends over the years. Covering a wide range of topics including contemporary design, lifestyle, and modern architecture, this first ever compendium of the magazine is especially relevant for its reporting of the 60s and 70s that are currently being revisited for inspiration in all design fields ranging from interiors to fashion.
Contributors to the book, including senior curator of Design at the MoMA Paola Antonelli, are all former editors of Abitare, and are now considered arbiters of style and design worldwide. Their new essays, along with the classic original articles reproduced in full in English and Italian constitute an important milestone in the analysis and appreciation of design.
Authors:
Mario Piazza is the creative director of Abitare.
Paola Antonelli is the Senior Curator of Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Alessandro Mendini is a legendary designer, architect, and theorist.
Stefano Boeri is the editor-in-chief of Abitare.
